On the Bandwidth Capabilities of Connected Slot Arrays

Résumé

Connected arrays constitute an appealing solution of phased arrays for their ultrawideband properties and their compact, planar structure. In this work, we introduce a unit-cell for a connected slot array, which explores the limits of this architecture both in terms of bandwidth and field of view. Five artificial dielectric layers (ADLs) cover the radiating aperture, matching the antenna to free space. The resulting design operates from 5–20 G Hz and is able to scan up to 60° in elevation along the E-, D-, and H-planes while being suitable for fabrication in PCB technology. Finally, the numerical results are compared against a theoretical low-frequency limit introduced recently in the literature.
