Triumphal milestones: the Equus maximus in foro and the Domitianic project on the Palatine Hill

Abstract

With the completion of the Flavian palace in AD 92/93, Domitian tried to create a new political and ideological center in Rome. Domitian's purpose was not to surpass the Domus Aurea but to create an original pole, which now extended to the whole Palatine Hill. The goal was ultimately to make it the very center of Rome, of power, and of the world, located on the original settlement of the city. Texts and monuments show symbolic places that mark the urban space with a particular significance. The triumph over the Germanic Chatti in 83 was like a 'founding act', and the Equus Domitiani in 90/91 a kind of milestone, which changed the Roman Forum into a sort of vestibule and shaped the relationships between the monuments of the new dynasty and the palatial area. From the Porta triumphalis and along the triumphal route, Domitian built monuments to celebrate his victories and those of his family around the Domus Augustana. All along this route, which also leads to the centre of the palace, one would pass some of these landmarks. And as was the case with the Equus Domitiani, which recalls the Colossus Neronis, the model is most likely Neronian.
